 I spent my youth playing a lot of radio shows, as did many pre-boomers. About dinnertime there is "Chief Midnight" and "Jack Armstrong the all-American Boy," plus a great many other adventure line through the entire early evening. About seven o'clock the comedies like "Fibber Magee & Molly" and "The Life of Reilly" got on. At eight were the dramas such as the "Lux Radio Theater." And, there were alarming applications too; each time I hear a squeaking door nowadays, I think of the starting of "Inter Sanctum."


The sole time I didn't like radio was when I was sick and couldn't head to college; these syrupy soap operas were the sole things on through the weekdays. Saturday mornings had Desi Serials plenty of good applications, which I heard till it had been time to go see the dual function matinee at the local movie house. Wednesday afternoons and days were also a good instances for radio.


There were applications the household listened to, but the people I liked many were those I heard in my own space on the old Crosley radio. It lay on the nightstand alongside my bed and looked like a toaster with knobs compared to the major, timber grained Philco system downstairs. Without any disruptions,


these applications performed strongly in the cinema of my mind. Sure, I really can use my imagination to envision circumstances that have been bigger than life, travel to places at the other end of the planet earth, and knowledge activities therefore real that the locks on the trunk of my neck stood straight up.


The escape was interesting, but there is a cost to pay. To be the first child on my block to have a secret decoder or the Lone Ranger's silver bullet ring with a hidden concept area, I had to deliver fifty cents and two or more package covers from the cereal models sponsoring the shows to a special Article Company Package, and then wait. I labored off the cash performing jobs around the house, but the household ate dull Cheerios and Wheaties for quite a long time - far longer than it took to get my wonderful toy from some distant place like Battle Creek, Michigan.
