7 Alternative Things to Do in Prague With Children
Traveling to Prague can be a rewarding experience for parents and children alike. Prague offers lots for children to see and do outside of the typical tourist attractions. And, thankfully, Czechs are quite open to children exploring the world around them. The city is dotted with lots of playgrounds, parks and exhibitions that make visiting a breeze for parents and their little ones.
Here are seven things to do that will supplement your guide to Prague. These will give the children a needed break from sightseeing and you parents will enjoy most of these as well.
1. Rent a Paddle Boat
If the weather is right, renting a paddle boat for a short hour ride is highly recommended. You can rent paddle or row boats from various spots along the Vltava River. From the river you can see Prague Castle, Charles Bridge and numerous spires and lovely scenes. It's an ideal way to spend an hour and a unique way to see the city.
2. Climb a Tower
The Prague skyline is dotted with various clock and lookout towers. Many of the towers have been converted into small gallery spaces and all include incredible views at the top. There are many to choose from but the best one for children is the Old Town Hall tower. Arrive shortly before the turn of the hour to watch the 14th century astronomical clock in action from the ground, then climb or take the elevator to the top for amazing 360 degree views of the city.
3. Explore Petrin
Petrin is a large green space that overlooks the city that offers a few things to do in Prague for children. Start at the base of the hill and take the funicular to the top of the hill. From here, you can visit the House of Mirrors (Bludiste), take in the Stefanik Observatory for a look through its telescopes and even climb Petrin Tower. And, don't forget to grab an ice cream near the tower and walk through the rose garden near by. And, if you're lucky the children will find the little secret garden just below the rose garden.
4. Prague Zoo
Take a break from the historical sights and head to the zoo. Yes, the zoo. The Prague Zoo is an intimate natural setting just north of the historic center. It offers a unique way to see a large variety of animals with numerous paths and pavilions set in a park-like atmosphere. The zoo also has spots for dining, a small trolley car for children to ride, playgrounds and a shallow wading pool to splash around in during the summer.
5. Old Trolley Ride
Every weekend from April to October one of Prague's historic trolleys, or trams, cuts across the city once per hour. The rumbling trams offer a fun experience for children with its open air doors and conductor calling out stop names. A tram ride is best combined with CITY Tours visits to either end stop along the route. The tram originates at the interesting Transport Museum and ends at the wonderful Stromovka Park.
6. Stromovka Park
Prague's largest park has a number of nice walking paths and playgrounds, but there are three attractions here worth considering. The first is the Prague Planetarium which houses a few hands on exhibitions and star shows with English translation through headphones. Nearby the children will also enjoy the Sea World Aquarium. It's fairly small so it won't take all day and provides a fun glimpse at sea life in the middle of this ancient city.
In the rear of the park you will find St. Matthew's Fairgrounds with its rides, games and cotton candy. It's not glamorous, but provides plenty of the tell tale fair experience.
7. Technical Museum of Prague
Prague's Technical Museum offers a plethora of things to see that relate to technology. It's like a historical time line of technology with small replicas and original items including an old locomotive and various cars. The museum has ongoing exhibitions as well covering various topics such as astronomy, printing, architecture and photography.
