How will you spruce up a mid-century a paneled space? Well, the first faltering step is actually to rip everything aside!
A little background: this room is certainly one of four that individuals did not paint or else upgrade after getting your house (the the others are both bathrooms and the kitchen). It absolutely was when an extremely stereotypical, retro-tastic wood-paneled room. But sooner or later, some body decorated it. And then some other people painted it yet another half-dozen instances after that. The last coat was white, and every time it got chilly, the boards caught, causing huge ugly dark gaps.
Time for a DIY den makeover!
Regrettably, it absolutely was a bit beyond us to strip the paint - sooner or later, some one applied some type of previous college, crazy-glue-infused-caulk to try to load the gaps. Even when we spent the days and months to have all the paint out of all of the grooves, the caulk could nevertheless be there obvious out at us.

We also did not believe we could eliminate the surfaces entirely, as the surfaces are original and the surfaces aren't, thus, the surfaces go under the cut, new ground, and new quarter-round that is covering the sides of the new floor. Until we were ready to deal with whatever sure-to-be-lovely shocks that may be lurking below our completely satisfactory new ground, we couldn't remove the paneling.
But we were not quite prepared to add the gazillionth coating of paint on the paneling, either. All things considered, how could we cover the cracks that type at attention level without painting all the surfaces dark? Also, the locations was in support of stripes. I've to state I was really against the idea of a hundreds of striped space, but all the other key style conclusions in the home were my a few ideas, and I want my partner to learn his wishes count. Definitely there clearly was a bargain to be found, if we seriously considered it enough.
The idea we created to make everybody else pleased was to utilize the present section as wainscoting, cutting the surfaces about 36" down the ground, eliminating the wood over 36", hanging drywall up in their place, and concluding it off with chair rails. I believe the end result will undoubtedly be quite satisfying, in keeping with our house's style, and a marked improvement around the prior look.
But first we (Adam) had plenty of work to accomplish. Cutting the surfaces, removing the old boards, insulating the surface wall, and holding drywall (with support from his dad).
Adam also mounted a fresh electric plug to power our pcs in their new, post-makeover location.
Next, we mudded and sanded (and mudded and sanded and mudded and sanded) the brand new walls. All of the space needed two units, some areas three, and one really difficult place needed four rounds. Therefore significantly dirt! Good thing we hung plastic in the gates to help keep the dirt in check. Even then we've some additional washing to complete because it wafts or gets tracked through the house.
Now that we're performed ruining the room, and have the new bones set up, it's time for you to beautify that press room/gaming room/library that people contact the den. Next on the to-do list is hanging cut, painting the wainscoting and new drywall, and putting the chair rail. We are also introducing ceiling-height shelf entirely around the space, included in an area purpose and structure makeover - but more on that in the next article!
Enjoyment benefit:
We found a great previous matchbook from the late 50s or so concealed in a very wall. The contact number was just two words and four numbers in days past! Exactly what a nice little local history.
